Dear Trust Supporters:

Southern Paint Company donated all exterior paint, and Massey Pest Control tented the buildings and treated wood.  Shawn Beckwith isour renovation expert, and he has been prepping the house for painting as well as researching the original color scheme and design. The building had not received exterior maintenance for six years and we are performing wood repairs as we prep for painting.

As a group we pleased with the  large support  at our recent volunteers day which helped with the street appeal and assisted with carpentry work, freshened the inside and tidied up the outside.

Thanks to all who helped!

Shawn has received four responsible painting quotes from qualified painters.  As a group we will do all we can on ground floor repairs, but we do need assistance with the upper levels from professionals.

Unfortunately, a proposal to the Racing and Rec Commission for $58000 to pay for the repairs and painting has been put on hold; the Commission is low on funds and has postponed grant funding at this time.

We greatly appreciate all of you who have so generously helped with
support this year, but if you can make a gift toward this Phase 3 Painting Project, it would help us complete the building exterior. We have many exciting projects and activities planned, and some rental events are already being placed on the calendar; we just need to get Lilian Place painted and opened to the public.

A group of antique experts is forming to help plan the exhibit rooms, and 1880s antiques will be gratefully accepted. Plans are beginning for landscaping. The next Volunteer Day will be planned for thefall. Thanks again for your support as we embark on this exciting venture
of preserving our heritage at Lilian Place.

Special thanks to Shawn Beckwith and Glenn Moore who have spent hours and hours pressure cleaning and scraping the building as we prepare for painting with original color scheme with all paint donated by Southern Paint Company.

We are hoping to open the site for  museum and small group meetings by August.  Pioneer families of the area are asked to consider sponsoring a room section for antiques, family data, and memorabilia.   Landscape sponsors are also needed as we will restore the yard to 1880s foliage.  If you have a club or group who would like to meet at Lilian Place, please contact us.

Volunteer names and photos will be posted soon on the Facebook/website

Lilian Place is the oldest house on Daytona's beachside. It was built by one of the city's first settlers in 1884, and it is a prime example of the Italianate Victorian architecture.  This is evident by the structures square towers, broad roof, asymmetrical floor plan, and verandas.  The tall windows, wood moldings, and paneled double doors all contribute to its architectural style.  Lilian Place is one of the few such structures of its kind remaining in Volusia County.

Originally its builder Laurence Thompson had placed in the deed a clause that the home was to be protected for one hundred years. That clause expired in 1984.  The Thompson family had done research and started paperwork to get the structure listed on the National Register, but they never completed the process.  The Trust  would immediately complete this application for National Register recognition as well as apply for local historical register recognition so that Lilian Place would be officially  listed as a significant historic site both rationally and locally.

Lilian Place actually has a link to an author of great American literature. Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage, made Lilian Place famous in his short story “The Open Boat” when he described how he and two companions were rescued when their boat sank off shore of Daytona Beach on Dec. 31, 1896. They were brought to Lilian Place to recover. Crane's well-known short story of this ordeal is still studied in American classrooms today.

Anecdotally, Lilian Place is also famous for its ghost. Pat Bennett, a local author and granddaughter of Laurence Thompson, has written books about Lucille, the legendary ghost who has made her presence known to residents throughout the years. Lilian Place has been featured in many news articles and historic journals as a significant site of history and folklore. This structure overlooking the Halifax River sits directly across from the historic Beach Street,  the Daytona Beach Yacht Club, and Jackie Robinson Park. In its prime, it was a wondrous sight to those sailing across the river and later driving across the bridge from the mainland. With restoration, it can resume this role of welcoming landmark capable of telling an important story about this area and its people

The Heritage Preservation Trust would acquire Lilian Place for a historical house museum and historical center. The Trust would establish an office and research/storage area on the second floor and renovate the first floor for furnished and interpreted museum rooms with period furnishings and displays acquired from local supporters and partners including the Dow Gallery of American Art at the Museum of Arts and Sciences.  One large sitting room will also be used for educational /historical programs for the public.  The facility will eventually be open 40 hours a week, no admission but a suggested contribution.

The third floor would provide living quarters which could be allocated in exchange for labor, such as residence for the museum director. Three apartments (formerly the old carriage house) are available for additional housing in exchange for labor or income or both. The Trust would collaborate with local colleges to find appropriate students who could be housed in exchange for labor in grounds or building maintenance. The living quarters available on the property will help to make Lilian Place more self-sufficient.

Usage of the first floor for historic interpretation and tours would augment income.  Small groups such as genealogical societies, family reunions, historic garden clubs, etc.  often rented Lilian Place for a variety of historic gatherings in the past, so this option would be available again to the public and provide income for maintenance.

For public access, a bus stop is at the corner of the property. County and city parking are available on city island which is a short distance across the bridge. Handicapped parking is available on site.   Currently the Lilian Place Historic House has ADA accessibility and compliance because this was required when it was previously permitted as a bed and breakfast. Future plans will see tours of the house via internet and computer monitors designed to interpret each major room of the house to the handicapped and challenged visitor.

Lilian Place should be open to the public six months after the Trust acquires the site.  Repairs should take at least 16 weeks including the phase 1 of re-painting. Phase 1 repairs are estimated at $25,000.00 with assistance from the city of Daytona Beach  and a private charitable trust pledged to help cover these costs.  Money will be raised through a direct mail solicitation together with targeted tours to potential partnership groups like the Council of Garden Clubs, the Civic League, DB Rotary and a number of area companies to include Brown and Brown, International Speedway Corp. ICI Homes and the Hotel-Motel Association.

The location on the Halifax River offers the potential for a "blue way" stop for boaters on the river.  In the future, the waterfront and dock area could be renovated to provide a public boat docking area for small watercraft and canoes.

Please phone me if you have further questions..and please encourage others to help us as we want to present to County Council on Dec. 10 a packet of  pledges of money and inkind support to show our community wants to preserve this important historic site.

Sincerely,
Dr. Nancy Long
President of Heritage Preservation Trust
