Wednesday was important for the Trust as its application for ECHO grant money to purchase the Hotchkiss-Mather House next door to Lilian Place was approved unanimously by the ECHO board. The next step is the County Council vote. We will keep you posted.
Some History: The Hotchkiss House, built in 1905, is a unique Queen Anne Victorian structure of four stories with a distinctive turret tower.
This property was owned by D.O Balcom and his partner pioneer Laurence Thompson, builder of Lilian Place, the oldest house on Daytona Beachside. Balcom was also a shareholder in the Halifax River Bridge and Railway Company with Thompson, T. L. Rogers, M. Huston, and John Ball. Together they financed the first bridge across the Halifax known as the South Bridge, later the Veteran's Memorial. In 1888, the Thompsons sold their share of the jointly-owned property to Balcom. Eventually E. Hubbell Hotchkiss built the grand Victorian turreted mansion high on the riverfront overlooking the Halifax River property. Eliphalet Hubbell Hotchkiss (1858-1917) was a millionaire who made his initial fortune with meat packing plants in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York. He also owned a bank in New Your City and was an early investor in the Pitney-Bowes Company. His technicians perfected a stapling machine that helped to revolutionize many industries in America. The E. H. Hotchkiss Company also perfected metal fasteners that made his company one of America's premier businesses at the turn-of-the-century. Hotchkiss died prematurely in Miami in 1917.
His daughter Gertrude Hotchkiss Heyn, who took over the company and successfully marketed the Hotchkiss Simplex Stapler, took ownership of the house in 1916. She was a benefactor to the community, including a major donation of the Heyn Chapel to Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune at now Bethune Cookman University. In 1959, Gertrude donated the property with all furniture and furnishings to the Halifax Hospital. Six months later Eliza Thompson Baggett Mather, granddaughter of Laurence Thompson, purchased the property, so the Thompson family came full circle to once again have possession of the site.
The house remained in the Thompson Mather family until purchase by Rise Harty in 1988.
If the Trust can acquire this property, we can merge the properties and create a "Heritage Square, " a unique cultural and historical site with museum and activity center. We will keep you posted.

- Thanks to Kelly White who was able to get us $500 bike week funding through the city commission . letter of thanks sent to Mayor and will be emailed to commission.
- Also Gary Libby made another $800 contribution and toured the place. He was very pleased and said we had done a nice job with the added antiques. He agreed with Fran that the small china cups and the occupied Japan items are quite valuable and best kept under glass or away from sticky hands. ( I did not tell him about the two missing items). Those small items have been placed in display cabinet in Dining room. He did say he is trying to secure Bouchelle estate items for LP, one of which is a beautiful Victorian cabinet which would safely display fragile and valuable items. It was a very nice visit with him.
- Chris Van Sima has wood materials to replace the steps and will do so tomorrow if weather has cleared
- FPZA award proposal has been submitted, and also attached is letter to race and rec commission.
- Manager of Ethan Allan wants to meet and discuss the sponsorship of master bedroom. Also manager of Home Depot is working on the grant for Team Adoption of LP. i will keep you posted.
- Event flyers: please share with anyone and any group. Posted on our facebook.

Dear Trust supporters:
In December 2009, our community banded together to save an important piece of Volusia County history, the 127-year old Lilian Place. The oldest home on the beachside, this 3-story building is an excellent example of Italianate High Victorian architecture and one of only two such structures in this style remaining in the county.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, plans are underway to restore Lilian Place to its original 1884 grandeur. Our grand opening this past June was a huge success, with over 200 people in attendance to witness the reopening of this historic gem. We have made a lot of progress in the last year and a half but still have a long way to go.
In order to preserve Lilian Place for future generations and continue our mission of historic preservation and education, we have established the Heritage Preservation Trust Endowment Fund.
- WANTED: old photos of Lilian Place or neighborhood, and antiques or items prior to 1900
- RENTAL SPACE AVAILABLE: Would you like to live at Lilian Place or have an office there?? 2 upstairs rooms in the Carriage House are available for rent for residence or office (bathroom, balcony overlooking the river, nice interior).

THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING LILIAN PLACE:
We need you to pledge financial and inkind support for the Trust to purchase and preserve Lilian Place.
Why you should pledge your support?

CLICK THE PICTURE ABOVE TO SEE LILLIAN PLACE IN ITS PRIME
AND SOME NEW
PHOTOS!
Lilian Place is the oldest house on Daytona's beachside. It was built by one of the city's first settlers in 1884, and it is a prime example of the Italianate Victorian architecture. This is evident by the structures square towers, broad roof, asymmetrical floor plan, and verandas. The tall windows, wood moldings, and paneled double doors all contribute to its architectural style. Lilian Place is one of the few such structures of its kind remaining in Volusia County.
Originally its builder Laurence Thompson had placed in the deed a clause that the home was to be protected for one hundred years. That clause expired in 1984. The Thompson family had done research and started paperwork to get the structure listed on the National Register, but they never completed the process. The Trust would immediately complete this application for National Register recognition as well as apply for local historical register recognition so that Lilian Place would be officially listed as a significant historic site both rationally and locally.
Lilian Place actually has a link to an author of great American literature. Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage, made Lilian Place famous in his short story “The Open Boat” when he described how he and two companions were rescued when their boat sank off shore of Daytona Beach on Dec. 31, 1896. They were brought to Lilian Place to recover. Crane's well-known short story of this ordeal is still studied in American classrooms today.
Anecdotally, Lilian Place is also famous for its ghost. Pat Bennett, a local author and granddaughter of Laurence Thompson, has written books about Lucille, the legendary ghost who has made her presence known to residents throughout the years. Lilian Place has been featured in many news articles and historic journals as a significant site of history and folklore. This structure overlooking the Halifax River sits directly across from the historic Beach Street, the Daytona Beach Yacht Club, and Jackie Robinson Park. In its prime, it was a wondrous sight to those sailing across the river and later driving across the bridge from the mainland. With restoration, it can resume this role of welcoming landmark capable of telling an important story about this area and its people
The Heritage Preservation Trust would acquire Lilian Place for a historical house museum and historical center. The Trust would establish an office and research/storage area on the second floor and renovate the first floor for furnished and interpreted museum rooms with period furnishings and displays acquired from local supporters and partners including the Dow Gallery of American Art at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. One large sitting room will also be used for educational /historical programs for the public. The facility will eventually be open 40 hours a week, no admission but a suggested contribution.
The third floor would provide living quarters which could be allocated in exchange for labor, such as residence for the museum director. Three apartments (formerly the old carriage house) are available for additional housing in exchange for labor or income or both. The Trust would collaborate with local colleges to find appropriate students who could be housed in exchange for labor in grounds or building maintenance. The living quarters available on the property will help to make Lilian Place more self-sufficient.
Usage of the first floor for historic interpretation and tours would augment income. Small groups such as genealogical societies, family reunions, historic garden clubs, etc. often rented Lilian Place for a variety of historic gatherings in the past, so this option would be available again to the public and provide income for maintenance.
For public access, a bus stop is at the corner of the property. County and city parking are available on city island which is a short distance across the bridge. Handicapped parking is available on site. Currently the Lilian Place Historic House has ADA accessibility and compliance because this was required when it was previously permitted as a bed and breakfast. Future plans will see tours of the house via internet and computer monitors designed to interpret each major room of the house to the handicapped and challenged visitor.
Lilian Place should be open to the public six months after the Trust acquires the site. Repairs should take at least 16 weeks including the phase 1 of re-painting. Phase 1 repairs are estimated at $25,000.00 with assistance from the city of Daytona Beach and a private charitable trust pledged to help cover these costs. Money will be raised through a direct mail solicitation together with targeted tours to potential partnership groups like the Council of Garden Clubs, the Civic League, DB Rotary and a number of area companies to include Brown and Brown, International Speedway Corp. ICI Homes and the Hotel-Motel Association.
The location on the Halifax River offers the potential for a "blue way" stop for boaters on the river. In the future, the waterfront and dock area could be renovated to provide a public boat docking area for small watercraft and canoes.
Please phone me if you have further questions..and please encourage others to help us as we want to present to County Council on Dec. 10 a packet of pledges of money and inkind support to show our community wants to preserve this important historic site.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nancy Long
President of Heritage Preservation Trust
